The Shadows by Alex North

Book Summary

You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile–always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet–and inspired more than one copycat.

Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree–and his victim–were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and suffering from dementia, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home.

It’s not long before things start to go wrong. Paul learns that Detective Amanda Beck is investigating another copycat that has struck in the nearby town of Featherbank. His mother is distressed, insistent that there’s something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago.

It wasn’t just the murder.

It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again…

This was my first Alex North book, I didn’t read The Whisper Man. And honestly after reading this one, didn’t really want to read it anymore. I decided to check this one out based on all the love for The Whisper Man, but it fell flat for me. I did like the twists in this book, one of them was huge! But I found many parts of it to be slow. I never want to tell anyone not to read a book since we all have different tastes, so if you like Alex North or are interested in this one, def check it out!

This book was pretty slow going at first and there was a lot of build up happening but the payoff and the ending were totally worth it. This is a perfect example of why I very rarely (like almost never) DNF a book because sometimes you really need the ending to pull it all together and this one did that beautifully. I loved his first book The Whisper Man (and still prefer that one to this) so I think I had really high expectations for this book and when there was not much going on in the first half I got a little discouraged about finishing it but I pushed through and I’m so glad I did. Great small town murder mystery/thriller book. If like slow burners, or small town murders, or Alex North in general then you should definitely give this one a try. Plus this cover is genius. Once you understand the books meaning of the shadows and how the hands come into play then you’ll get why this cover is brilliant.
