The Last House Guest by Megan Miranda

Book Summary

Littleport, Maine, has always felt like two separate towns: an ideal vacation enclave for the wealthy, whose summer homes line the coastline; and a simple harbor community for the year-round residents whose livelihoods rely on service to the visitors.

Typically, fierce friendships never develop between a local and a summer girl—but that’s just what happens with visitor Sadie Loman and Littleport resident Avery Greer. Each summer for almost a decade, the girls are inseparable—until Sadie is found dead. While the police rule the death a suicide, Avery can’t help but feel there are those in the community, including a local detective and Sadie’s brother, Parker, who blame her. Someone knows more than they’re saying, and Avery is intent on clearing her name, before the facts get twisted against her.

Since reading “The Missing Girls”, I have always been a fan of Megan Miranda’s mysteries.

“The Last House Guest”, another book by Miranda, is a fun summer story. I loved it!

Sadie Loman and Avery Greer are best friends. There are those in the town who blame Avery for the death of Sadie, which was ruled a suicide. Could a story be any juicier?

The story is told through Avery’s perspective in two timelines, the past, which is the night of Sadie’s death and the present, which is Avery trying to get answers to this cold case.

Avery is a likable character but I was not too fond of Sadie, who came across more like a poor little rich girl.

“The Last House Guest” is a slow and steady story until the reveal at the end. This book is on the lighter side and lacks that punch throughout until the end where Miranda wraps up the mystery around Sadie’s death. You will not expect it either.

“The Last House Guest” is a light mystery perfect to read at the beach or at the pool that makes you eager to read another Megan Miranda mystery.
