Book Summary

In the vein of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Life After Life, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is New York Times bestselling author V. E. Schwab’s genre-defying tour de force.

A Life No One Will Remember. A Story You Will Never Forget.

France, 1714: in a moment of desperation, a young woman makes a Faustian bargain to live forever―and is cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Thus begins the extraordinary life of Addie LaRue, and a dazzling adventure that will play out across centuries and continents, across history and art, as a young woman learns how far she will go to leave her mark on the world.

But everything changes when, after nearly 300 years, Addie stumbles across a young man in a hidden bookstore and he remembers her name.

“The Invisible Life of Addie Larue”

Wow!! What a beautiful book! It took me awhile to write this review because how do you put such a beautiful story into words? You will only understand it if you read it yourself.

I beautiful lyrical prose, we meet Addie who has made a deal with the devil to live forever. As all things do, this came at a cost. What was her high price for immortality? Addie would never make her mark on the world and everyone she meets would be destined to forget her. All changes when she meets Henry, a fellow lost soul that works at a bookstore. The only person in 300 years to remember her.

“The Invisible Life Of Addie Larue” is a slow paced, character driven story between a girl and the darkness she made a deal with. All the characters had so many layers and I completely adored Addie. Then there is Henry. When Henry was introduced, the book got the extra .5 stat which made it a five star for me.

“The Invisible Life of Addie Larue” is my first VE Schwab book and it had me crying. Now I am ready to read all her books.

This was one of my favorite books of 2020. Completely beautiful. It was my first V.E. Schwab, and I’ve since bought several others. I’m also not one for fantasy, but this book was a perfect mix of realism and magic, it was just utterly fantastic. I got lost in the book, completely enamored, during a year when I really needed an escape. I really loved this one. If you haven’t read it, you NEED to!

V.E. Schwab’s The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a beautifully haunting tale about life, love, and loss. The reader first meets Addie when she is twenty-three in 1714 France, running away from a life that she does not want. Addie ends up making a deal with a god that ends up leaving her immortal but at a price and the reader then gets to experience Addie’s life at different points in history. Addie will never be remembered by those she meets yet she will remember everything, and she is left to make her way through the world as a ghost.

Schwab uses the first quarter of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue as a way to set up the entire story and because of this, some readers may find the beginning to be a slow start, but it is so worth it. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a novel that is meant to be savoured. Schwab wrote it in such a way that readers are forced to slow down and digest everything that is in front of them because if they don’t, then they will miss important parts of the story and feel like they need to go back and reread things. If you read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue slowly and savour everything that happens, then your reading experience will be amazing.

Very rarely have I found a book that moves me in such a way that I have a hard time describing what it has made me felt. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue left me with a mixture of sadness and nostalgia; my heart felt heavy and full of light at the same time. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is incredibly well written and everything has a place, even though the beginning can feel like it drags on, the reader will come to appreciate the slowness and savour Schwab’s words. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is dripping with melancholy and it forces the reader to slow down and enjoy the story. This is not a book that you binge read, this is a book that you savour every word until the very end. This is a story that I soon won’t forget.

What an epic journey I just had with Addie LaRue, Henry and Luc. WHAT A JOURNEY! I love that this 448 page novel has a very short synopsis and to be honest…. at first I thought this may be one of those that lulls here and there but I am so happy to have proven myself wrong. Now, we can talk about what an amazing writer this author is and how this book just proves once again that Schwab spins yet another outrageously good tale that you will fall in love with. For me, it wasn’t just about that, but more so the fact that humans are complex and we all want to feel loved and have our freedom… but at what price? Always be careful what you wish for.

300 years of Addie LaRue. I thoroughly enjoyed the jumps in time lines as we get to see her through these various journeys. I felt for her so much and couldn’t imagine what it would be like to consistently be forgotten… even though at times I’ve certainly wished I could be invisible in this oh so busy world. She is one tough woman! And then to finally be seen! FINALLY! And then story starts to really soar. I fell in love with all the characters. Even Luc. How could you not? My eyes got a bit misty towards the end and I closed the book fully satisfied but also wanting more. Ahem, Schwab…. do we get to see the next dance? Or has the curtain fallen?

This story will definitely stick with me for a long time. The main storyline is fantastic (as you can probably gleam from this review) but it’s really the subtle nuances and the undercurrent of everything else that I truly found fascinating. Like finding that backbeat of a track rather than just paying attention to the loudest one that everyone else is dancing to. Really the perfect story I needed in my life at this moment.

And Addie LaRue, I promise I will always remember you. While I’m obviously rating this 5 stars, I also give it 7 beautifully placed freckles. ❤
