Book Summary

The Hunting Wives share more than target practice, martinis, and bad behavior in this novel of obsession, seduction, and murder.

Sophie O’Neill left behind an envy-inspiring career and the stressful, competitive life of big-city Chicago to settle down with her husband and young son in a small Texas town. It seems like the perfect life with a beautiful home in an idyllic rural community. But Sophie soon realizes that life is now too quiet, and she’s feeling bored and restless.

Then she meets Margot Banks, an alluring socialite who is part of an elite clique secretly known as the Hunting Wives. Sophie finds herself completely drawn to Margot and swept into her mysterious world of late-night target practice and dangerous partying. As Sophie’s curiosity gives way to full-blown obsession, she slips farther away from the safety of her family and deeper into this nest of vipers.

When the body of a teenage girl is discovered in the woods where the Hunting Wives meet, Sophie finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation and her life spiraling out of control.

    MY THOUGHTS:
To predictable but overall an okay read. But not a favorite. The twist at the end actually saved the book in my opinion. Overall I would recommend at least once

    Rating ⭐⭐⭐. 5

This book was so bizarre! I’m kind of over the creepy lesbian thing going on in popular thrillers, I think it’s honestly overdone and I think it’s a toxic portrayal of gay relationships… not my thing. I’d love to see gay characters in thrillers as protagonists, but I feel like we only see them as antagonists, as people we aren’t rooting for, and it just leaves me with a bad taste. Anyone else? I’d love to hear thoughts about this because I feel like I’m seeing it so much. The book kept me reading, but not because I liked it. Just my personal take.

Welcome to the sensational secret society that is The Hunting Wives, a Wisteria Lane-esque group of women transplanted to Texas and perpetually soaked with chardonnay. Ringleader Margot certainly gives Gabrielle Solis a run for her money, taking easily led sweetie pie Sophie under her maleficent wing for girls’ nights peppered with boys and bullets, neither of which were pictured on seeking out the quiet life as a happy family of three. When target practice takes a murky turn, the gun-toting ways of the wives are under scrutiny, Sophie’s antics squarely in the frame. Will diving in become her downfall…?

An insanely addictive fast paced read, May Cobb nails the fly on the wall obsession that immerses the reader into this story from page one. You can’t fail to feel the sensation of being unable to look away as lives career towards an abyss, salacious behaviour abounding and outrageous moments around every corner. Life with the hunting wives is certainly not for the faint of heart, no boredom to be found in this small Texas town. Tension was held really well throughout the entire story and I felt a wave of emotions watching Sophie navigate the pull between heart and head, knowing better but unable to tear herself away from the lure of drama, the highs of excitement often tempered by hangovers described so viscerally that I could almost feel them myself!

A fabulous piece of five star fiction, if you’re looking for a sizzling scorcher for summer, The Hunting Wives is for you!

    The Hunting Wives

“Nothing good comes from boredom. Idle hands are the devils workshop.” Henry David Thoreau

Sophie had it all; a successful career and handsome, loving husband. She is unhappy with her life and wants to slow down. She moves and creates an idyllic life in a little town. Sophie now has a blog, beautiful house, lush garden, young son and the handsome, loving husband. She is not satisfied and BORED.

Sophie falls under the spell of Margot Banks, who befriends Sophie and invites her to be part of the Hunting Wives, an inner circle of friends that love hunting, drinks and gossip.

You just want to grab Sophie and shake her. She is constantly making poor decisions. First and foremost, Sophie is obsessed with Margot and will do anything she suggests. Will she follow her to the point of self sabotage? Maybe.

It felt like a mix of “Real Housewives” and “Big Little Lies”. “The Hunting Wives” is categorized as a thriller and one would expect suspense early on in the story. It is the thing that keeps you hooked.

The author took great care in setting up the friendships and environment down to the smallest details. I love atmospheric books that transport me to a different setting but this was a too little detailed for me. Everything is described down to the littlest detail, like the outfits, how drinks are poured into a glass and how a recipe is prepared. One could live out the scenes the author described.

That being said, this book is a real page turner filled with salacious gossip and scandal. However, I needed a little more of a plot and it does not take off until 3/4 into the book. Although the last portion of the book really caught my attention.

Overall, “The Hunting Wives” is a fun book. There were several portions in which you want to jump into the book and live in the scene. If you are looking for a light read, this book is perfect. “The Hunting Wives” is perfect for a beachy escape.
