Book Summary

A long-ago accident–and a vistor from out of the blue. . .

Stephanie and Patrick are adjusting to life with their colicky twin girls. The babies are a handful, but even as Stephanie struggles with the disorientation of sleep deprivation, there’s one thing she’s sure of: she has all she ever wanted.

Then Erica, a woman from Patrick’s past, appears and makes a disturbing accusation. Patrick had always said his first wife’s death was an accident, but now Erica claims it was murder.

Patrick insists he’s innocent, that this is nothing but a blackmail attempt. Still, Erica knows things about Patrick–things that make Stephanie begin to question her husband. Stephanie isn’t sure what, or who, to believe. As Stephanie’s trust in Patrick begins to falter, Patrick stands to lose everything. Is Patrick telling the truth–is Erica the persuasive liar Patrick says she is? Or has Stephanie made a terrible mistake?

How will it end?

If you want a one-sitting thriller that’s going to keep you up all night, this, my friends, is the book for you!

A domestic spine-chiller telling the story of new parents Stephanie and Patrick, it’s clear from the outset that marital bliss is not where this tale is headed. As Erica, an unwelcome blast from Patrick’s past, surfaces accompanied by threats and recriminations, all hell looks set to break loose and leave the reader reeling in its wake. I confess to at times being sidetracked by Stephanie’s sleep-addled musings, querying whether all could be a fantastical figment of her imagination. Needless to say any of the theories I came up with were quickly turned on their head as Erica quickly becomes the link that binds the hidden pasts that more than just Patrick have sought to keep under wraps.

Erica herself is a heady combination of beauty and cunning, her perfect embodiment of narcissistic traits inducing a factor of fear that such people truly walk among us with complete disregard for all but their own agenda. The climax of this suspenseful read, once reached, was truly perfect, deftly weaving untethered strands into a conclusion, closure coming with a just a hint of irresolution that leaves a thirst for theorizing with fellow readers.

This fifth novel from Lapena is a gift to those fans who have devoured her books since The Couple Next Door and also guarantees any new readers will be adding her entire back catalogue to their TBRs without hesitation.
