Book Summary

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying comes your next obsession. You’ll never feel the same about family again.

Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story are cousins, but they barely know each another, and they’ve never even met their grandmother. Rich and reclusive, she disinherited their parents before they were born. So when they each receive a letter inviting them to work at her island resort for the summer, they’re surprised . . . and curious.

Their parents are all clear on one point–not going is not an option. This could be the opportunity to get back into Grandmother’s good graces. But when the cousins arrive on the island, it’s immediately clear that she has different plans for them. And the longer they stay, the more they realize how mysterious–and dark–their family’s past is.

The entire Story family has secrets. Whatever pulled them apart years ago isn’t over–and this summer, the cousins will learn everything.

    .
This story centers around three cousins that are virtual strangers.
Their parents were disinherited by their uber rich grandmother Mildred, via a cryptic letter, many years ago. The cousins have never met Mildred and have never known why she cut them all out of her life.
    .
Out of the blue, each of the cousins receive an invitation to come work at an island resort Mildred owns.
    .
Their parents are eager to be received back into Mildred’s good graces and see this as the opportunity to do so.
    .
Once they arrive on the island, mysterious things begin to happen. Secrets begin to emerge. Vendettas are revealed.

I absolutely love Karen McManus. Her character development and storylines are masterful.

Initially because this book takes place on an island and revolves around a group of cousins my mind went to one of my favorite YA books of all time, We Were Liars. But that is where the similarities end. In The Cousins we follow the story of three cousins who are all invited to work at their Grandmother’s luxurious resort for the summer. The Story’s are a glamorous family that are the center of the towns gossip.

This was a great mystery that had me guessing from beginning to end. This book was so atmospheric without going overboard on details. I literally felt like I was along for the ride, whether it be at the families mansion, the beach at night, at a summer gala, or a hot dance bar. She did an excellent job at giving me an escape of my quarantined house bound life. I loved the interaction between the cousins and how she would answer questions throughout the book, but in doing so would leave you with other mysteries to reveal later.

This was another great read by Karen McManus, and I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next. I would recommend this one to YA fans, Karen McManus fans, and mystery fans!
