Book Summary

It’s November 1991. Nirvana’s in the tape deck, George H. W. Bush is in the White House, and movie-obsessed college student Charlie Jordan is in a car with a man who might be a serial killer.

Josh Baxter, the man behind the wheel, is a virtual stranger to Charlie. They met at the campus ride board, each looking to share the long drive home to Ohio. Both have good reasons for wanting to get away. For Charlie, it’s guilt and grief over the shocking murder of her best friend, who became the third victim of the man known as the Campus Killer. For Josh, it’s to help care for his sick father—or so he says.

The longer she sits in the passenger seat, the more Charlie notices there’s something suspicious about Josh, from the holes in his story about his father to how he doesn’t want her to see inside the trunk. As they travel an empty, twisty highway in the dead of night, an increasingly anxious Charlie begins to think she’s sharing a car with the Campus Killer. Is Josh truly dangerous? Or is Charlie’s jittery mistrust merely a figment of her movie-fueled imagination?

One thing is certain—Charlie has nowhere to run and no way to call for help. Trapped in a terrifying game of cat and mouse played out on pitch-black roads and in neon-lit parking lots, Charlie knows the only way to win is to survive the night.

This is the third book I have read from this author. After loving Home Before Dark and Final Girls I was so excited to read this one.

I will start by saying I absolutely love the cover. Being born in 1989 I grew up seeing movie covers that looked very similar to this. Here’s where my unpopular opinion comes in. I wanted to love this one but there were a few things that unfortunately didn’t jive with me. Usually the plots from this author are far more complex, yet for me this one was almost too simplistic. I was able to figure out the major reveal early on, and ended up skimming pages throughout. I would definitely read other books that this author has written, but unfortunately this is my least liked novel from him.

The cover for me gets 📕📕📕📕📕. I was wanting way more out of the story than I ended up getting.
As a Thriller Book Lover Reviewer, I receive a small
compensation for the time it takes me to provide my honest reviews on the Thriller Book Lover website. Although I receive compensation for this role, my reviews are my 100% honest opinion. My ratings have not been influenced in any way by the compensation that I receive. The book review I have provided here is the same rating I would provide if I were to rate it on other book reviewing sites.

I’m a pretty picky thriller fan, but man oh man did I enjoy this one! I would’ve read it entirely in one sitting if it hadn’t been for my husband urging me to turn out the lights. And then of course I had nightmares about the book, woke up and promptly finished it. As one does. Because I had to! I thought the suspense and intrigue here was brilliant, and that the plot was wholly unique – something that’s hard for thrillers to be these days! If you like books with shock value, I think you’ll absolutely love SURVIVE THE NIGHT!

Riley Sager is one of my favorites, I look forward to his next book year round, and this book definitely lived up to my super high expectations!

I don’t want to give anything away so I’ll keep it short and sweet. The pacing is really phenomenal, you are literally along for the ride, and if you been waiting all year for this one I promise you won’t be disappointed. I absolutely loved the ending I thought it was perfect. Definitely one of my favorite books of the year so far.
