Book Summary

Korede’s sister Ayoola is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola’s third boyfriend in a row is dead, stabbed through the heart with Ayoola’s knife. Korede’s practicality is the sisters’ saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood (bleach, bleach, and more bleach), the best way to move a body (wrap it in sheets like a mummy), and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures to Instagram when she should be mourning her “missing” boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she’s exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola’s phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she’s willing to go to protect her.

This book is packed full of goodness at just over 200 pages. I don’t have any siblings but those that I consider family have my fullest loyalty – I could only imagine what I would do for an actual blood related sibling knowing how far I’d go for the others I consider family.

Here’s the thing – this book reads fast – it’s easily a one sit read even for those who normally don’t read that voraciously. Two sisters. One killer. One clean up. Lots of craziness. And that ending. Look, I had to go back and reread it because I wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing anything. Thank goodness for discussions! I’ll just give you the same advice I received… don’t overthink it.

I highly recommend this book. Pick it up and don’t plan to put it down until you’re finished.

Oyinkan Braithwaite’s novel My Sister, the Serial Killer is fast-paced, satirical, and entertaining. Taking place in Lagos, Nigeria, Korede is a respected nurse who was stuck with all the undesirable traits whereas her sociopathic sister, Ayoola has always been the golden child, the one who can do no wrong. Korede has always been there for her younger sister Ayoola; from standing up for her when they were younger to helping clean up Ayoola’s murders, Korede will do anything to make sure her sister is safe.

Braithwaite does an excellent job at creating the sister dynamic that dominates her novel. While the two sisters couldn’t be more different, it’s evident that they will do anything for each other. Braithwaite takes that sister bond to a whole new level when creating a serial killer and her sister who will do anything to save her. Braithwaite also includes the rivalry that only sisters could understand when introducing Tade, the good-looking doctor that Korede is in love with, but he has his eyes on Ayoola.

Braithwaite’s My Sister, the Serial Killer is a quick and entertaining read that readers can likely finish in a day. While it’s any easy read, it also feels like some thing is missing. Some aspects My Sister, the Serial Killer could have been drawn out more and it almost feels like Braithwaite only scratched the surface of the dynamic between Korede and Ayoola, and their story. Overall, Braithwaite’s novel was entertaining but it would’ve been interesting to see the story taken even further.
