Book Summary

All it takes to unravel a life is one little secret…

Marin had the perfect life. Married to her college sweetheart, she owns a chain of upscale hair salons, and Derek runs his own company. They’re admired in their community and are a loving family—until their world falls apart the day their son Sebastian is taken.

A year later, Marin is a shadow of herself. The FBI search has gone cold. The publicity has faded. She and her husband rarely speak. She hires a P.I. to pick up where the police left off, but instead of finding Sebastian, she learns that Derek is having an affair with a younger woman. This discovery sparks Marin back to life. She’s lost her son; she’s not about to lose her husband, too. Kenzie is an enemy with a face, which means this is a problem Marin can fix.

Permanently.

I feel desolate, bereft, such is the hangover from this incredible psychological thriller! Consumed from the first page, I could not put it down, twists and shocks coming thick and fast at every turn.

The premise is one of a loving family decimated by the broad daylight abduction of their four year old son. Still missing over a year later, mother Marin is a shadow of who she once was, her husband Derek turned philanderer in a quest to ease his pain. When Marin discovers his infidelity, she realizes that, unlike her son’s disappearance, the mistress is one problem she can solve….with permanent effect…

Ideal for fans of suspenseful reads, Little Secrets focuses on the aftermath of tragedy at a point where its protagonist is consumed with grief, fueling a thirst for revenge. The complexities of Marin’s character and its shaping by her experiences are laid bare, her flaws not shied away from despite the sympathy deserved for her suffering. I liked that as readers we witness her in all her forms, from mother to wife, successful entrepreneur, in seeking therapy and in vengeful mode – I certainly would not want to be on her bad side!

The four parts of the book all commence with a quote relevant to the ensuing content – the first from a poem and the rest from songs which I highly recommend playing as you read – they truly are the perfect atmospheric accompaniments.

It’s been a while since I have been so entirely within the grip of a story and as impressed with the cleverness of plot and revelations. A five star thriller that packs a punch and has rocketed right to the top of my reading recommendations, not to mention made me desperate to read Jar of Hearts.

If this hasn’t been on your radar yet, add it straight to that TBR, you most certainly will not regret it!

    “You Alive?”

Is it weird to say I’m in love with Jennifer Hillier now? After reading Jar of Hearts last year, I was beyond excited to read Little Secrets and am happy to report that I absolutely loved this one too! I think this is a good one to go in blind (but I actually feel this way about all books). Hillier touches on loss, infidelity, suicide, depression, friendship and marriage – and gives us twists and turns that I did not expect.

“You said hurt people… hurt people.”

What a binge read. These characters are flawed and my heart went out to them. Marin’s decline into her own savageness felt so real and raw. I literally stopped chewing and just soaked in one particular chapter. I may have gotten a little teary eyed but let’s blame that on the isolation shall we? *wink* Kenzie turned into something more than I had expected and I loved to loathe her.

In a world full of thrillers that seem to saturate us with the same story over and over again, Hillier brings us twisty realness and was exactly what I needed in my reading journey right now. I just want to pull Sebastian in for a big bear hug and get him the biggest lollipop in the world.

Jar of Hearts is one of my all time favorite thrillers. In my opinion it is severely underated and deserves a lot more attention then it received. When I learned that Jennifer Hillier had a new book on the way, I read it within 24 hours of receiving it.
To be honest when I read the synopisis I was less excited about reading Little Secrets. The last book that I read revolving a missing child was somewhat boring. This was not the case whatsoever. This book has so many different layers to it. It’s not the traditional missing child story. It is a page turner and I think I enjoyed this even more than Jar of Hearts. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new thriller/mystery. I hope that Jennifer Hillier receives all the attention and praise for this book that she deserves when it is released in April.

I absolutely loved “Jar of Hearts”. I still recommend it to everyone. So to say I was overly excited about Jennifer Hillier’s new book “Little Secrets” would be accurate!

It starts off with Marin and Derek’s son being taken in broad daylight and I could just feel the panic and emotion they were feeling. Jennifer has a way of doing that and I love it. Unfortunately, for the rest of the book, I just wasn’t feeling it. There was a little too much going on and it seemed to be about her husband’s affair more than anything else. I’ll admit I got bored with the storyline after the first few chapters and just wasn’t looking forward to picking it back up. However, I was still intrigued enough to finish it because I wanted to find out what happens. I don’t want to discourage anyone from picking this one up because I’m definitely the unpopular opinion here. It just wasn’t a favorite.
