Book Summary

This is the story of three best friends: one who was murdered, one who went to prison, and one who’s been searching for the truth all these years . . .

When she was sixteen years old, Angela Wong – one of the most popular girls in school – disappeared without a trace. Nobody ever suspected that her best friend, Georgina Shaw, now an executive and rising star at her Seattle pharmaceutical company, was involved in any way. Certainly not Kaiser Brody, who was close with both girls back in high school.

But fourteen years later, Angela Wong’s remains are discovered in the woods near Geo’s childhood home. And Kaiser – now a detective with Seattle PD – finally learns the truth: Angela was a victim of Calvin James. The same Calvin James who murdered at least three other women.

To the authorities, Calvin is a serial killer. But to Geo, he’s something else entirely. Back in high school, Calvin was Geo’s first love. Turbulent and often volatile, their relationship bordered on obsession from the moment they met right up until the night Angela was killed.

For fourteen years, Geo knew what happened to Angela and told no one. For fourteen years, she carried the secret of Angela’s death until Geo was arrested and sent to prison.

While everyone thinks they finally know the truth, there are dark secrets buried deep. And what happened that fateful night is more complex and more chilling than anyone really knows. Now the obsessive past catches up with the deadly present when new bodies begin to turn up, killed in the exact same manner as Angela Wong.

How far will someone go to bury her secrets and hide her grief? How long can you get away with a lie? How long can you live with it? Find out in Jennifer Hillier’s Jar of Hearts.

    *Trigger Warning: rape, abuse*

Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier is a chilling and wild read that is bound to keep readers engaged from the very beginning to the very end and readers will likely want to finish the story in one sitting because they’re going to want to know what is going to happen next. Part police procedural, part psychological thriller; Hillier begins Jar of Hearts with a murder trial fourteen years after Angela Wong was brutally killed. Georgina (Geo) Shaw is about to go to prison for helping cover up the murder of her best friend when she was sixteen years old. Geo is sentenced to five years in prison and just before she gets out, a murder takes place in her hometown committed in the same manner as Angela Wong’s murder nineteen years prior. Hillier goes back and forth between past and present seamlessly while having the reader follow Geo and detective Kaiser Brody’s points of view. Hillier breaks up the story into five parts named after the stages of grief. The twists in this novel aren’t revealed until Hillier wants the reader to know about them and because of that, Jar of Hearts will keep the reader guessing what’s going to happen next.

Jar of Hearts does bring up some harder to read topics including rape and abuse that some readers may find challenging to get through. The reader should be made aware of these before diving into this novel because they are heavily detailed at times. It would be nice to see a trigger warning section at the beginning of Jar of Hearts just so that readers can prepare themselves if needed. Grief is also a large topic in this novel and it is even the focal point to the five different parts in Hillier’s work.

Hillier does an excellent job at weaving in and out of the past and the present which makes this read a smooth and enjoyable experience for readers. The characters in Jar of Hearts are both flawed and interesting which allows the reader to find some kind of common ground with them. The reader gets to know Geo when she was sixteen, before she went to prison, when she is in prison, and after she gets out and because of this, the reader is able to see her evolve over time. There is little to no redundancy in Hillier’s writing which makes Jar of Hearts such a fantastic novel. Readers are bound to devour this novel and be left satisfied when it’s over.

Georgina (Geo) Shaw and Angela Wong were best friends in high school. They were pretty much inseparable; until one night, Angela Wong disappears without a trace.

Fourteen years later, Geo is an executive at a pharmaceutical company and engaged to be married; life seems to be good. That is until she and her high school boyfriend, Calvin James are both arrested for the murder of Angela Wong. Her remains were discovered near Geo’s childhood home. Geo goes to prison for 5 years for her involvement in the murder and Calvin, who has murdered three women since Angela, gets sentenced to life. When Geo is released from prison, she moves back in with her father in her childhood home. Not long after being released, another body was found near the same spot Angela was buried and disposed of in the same way. Is someone trying to send Geo a message?

I don’t want to say much more because I don’t want to spoil anything but wow, I got way more than I bargained for! Lots of twists, very dark, gruesome at times, but beautifully written! I read this last year and I still think about it a lot! This is definitely in my top 5 for thrillers.
