Book Summary

When her favorite true crime podcast host goes missing, an adrift young woman sets out to investigate and plunges headfirst into the wild backcountry of Northern California and her own dangerous obsession.

Sera loves true crime podcasts. They give her a sense of control in a world where women just like her disappear daily. She’s sure they are preparing her for something. So when Rachel, her favorite podcast host, goes missing, Sera knows it’s time to act. Rachel has always taught her to trust her instincts.

Sera follows the clues hidden in the episodes to an isolated ranch outside Rachel’s small hometown to begin her search. She’s convinced her investigation will make Rachel so proud. But the more Sera digs into this unfamiliar world, the more off things start to feel. Because Rachel is not the first woman to vanish from the ranch, and she won’t be the last…

Rachel did try to warn her.

This book was freaking wild. It’s probably one I’m going to need to give my sister, who loves a good f-ed up thriller 🤣🙈 but at the end of the day, it wasn’t really for ME. I was intrigued by the true crime podcast element of the book, though I admittedly cannot and will not listen to true crime podcasts IRL. I’m too much of a scaredy cat! So, why I thought I’d fully understand and appreciate a book with a true crime podcast plot I have no idea 🤣 but I do know a LOT of y’all love true crime and as such will loooove this book, so I still want to promote it for those of you I know will truly appreciate it the way I couldn’t. Have you ever seen that quote from Amy Poehler that’s like: “great for you, not for me”? That’s this book. So I hope you enjoy and I do think others will love it, unless you’re a 🙀🙀 like me!

Review: This was a book that left me puzzled on how to rate it.

This did a great job of keeping my attention, had a weird creepy atmosphere, and of course this cover is breathtaking. It is a gritty slow burn mystery.

To be honest, I’m getting tired of podcasts in books, but this one was done in a different way that the podcast was just a minor part of the story. There is a tv show coming too, and I will absolutely check it out.

Now for the negatives: I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that mentioned so many dead animals. Especially in the first half of the book it seemed to be almost every chapter. I don’t really see what it added to the story other than shock value. And then the ending. I’m hoping the final version clears this up. I found it to be somewhat confusing.

So my problems with this book are mostly “me” problems. I think this is going to make the perfect book for someone else, but for me there were too many cases of animal neglect and death in this novel.

So what do I rate this?

Rating: 3.5 rounded down to 3…

This story felt like a mixture of Quentin Tarantino and Stephen King, with a little podcast thrown in. The town and the people are bizarre, creepy, disconcerting and surreal.

It’s getting mixed reviews but I enjoyed it.
I buddy read it with my book bestie which makes any book better.
Both of us are pretty good at formulating theories and we were both stumped with this one. And wrong about the ending.

You have to give it points for being unique. The end of the book did seem a bit disjointed, but overall, it’s entertaining ✨

Sera obsessively listens to a crime podcast chronicling stories of women that have disappeared. Suddenly Rachel, the host of the podcast, goes silent. No new podcasts, no social media posts. Sera is certain that something bad has happened to Rachel.

Using the details that she has gleaned from all of the podcast episodes, Sera goes to Rachel’s small, isolated town- determined to find her…….
