Book Summary

At the wedding of the year, a killer needs no invitation.

Jutting from sparkling turquoise waters off the Italian coast, Isle Isola is an idyllic setting for a wedding. In the majestic cliff-top villa owned by the wealthy Compton family, up-and-coming artist Claire Hunter will marry handsome, charming Jack Compton, surrounded by close family, intimate friends…and a host of dark secrets.

From the moment Claire sets foot on the island, something seems amiss. Skeletal remains have just been found. There are other, newer disturbances, too. Menacing texts. A ruined wedding dress. And one troubling shadow hanging over Claire’s otherwise blissful relationship—the strange mystery surrounding Jack’s first wife.

Then a raging storm descends, the power goes out—and the real terror begins…

Fast-paced and brilliantly unpredictable, J.T. Ellison’s breathtaking new novel invites you to a wedding none will forget—and some won’t survive.

Before I go into the review, can we just take a moment to look at this breathtaking cover. 😍

Any way back to the book…
“Her Dark Lies” was my first J.T Ellison book and it will not be the last. The story begins as guests gather for a special occasion off the Italian coast. Something is lurking in the shadows?! I am here for it!

“Her Dark Lies” starts slow with descriptions of the island, villas and scenery. The pace picks up as the story progresses and there are a lot of surprises along the way.

The book follows the point of view (POV) of Claire and the person doing the attacks. I loved both perspectives. None of the characters are innocent. They all have skeletons in their closets. Trust no one.

The short chapters, along with the multiple POV’s, kept the story moving. Strange things start happening quickly in the book. In order to find out the family’s secrets, I needed to turn pages. I did yell at Claire a few times: “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?” “WHY CLAIRE?” The ending fell a little flat for me, nevertheless, I really enjoyed “Her Dark Lies.”

If you like locked room mysteries, this is a book to check out.

    ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Claire has met the man of her dreams- Jack is handsome, loving, protective and from an extravagantly weathly family.

Their wedding is set to take place at his family’s breathtaking island villa that sits atop a cliff off the coast of Italy.

But, almost immediately after arriving at the villa, things feel wrong to Claire. Then strange things begin happening- escalating quickly from eerie to vicious….. A storm begins raging outside…The power goes out…. 👀

I am really impressed by this author’s range- all of her books have been so different. This one is like a locked room thriller mystery with a little James Bond thrown in. It definitely kept me interested and flipping pages. And I am obsessed with this cover! 🙌

My 5th Ellison book! She truly knows how to entertain, y’all! I enjoyed traveling to Italy to a clifftop villa that reeks of money, gorgeous views, hidden passages and statues. Yes, please. But with all of this, comes the Compton family … and they require a few things from Claire before she’s set to marry Jack. They all have secrets… just how many of them will come to light and will Claire last longer than Jack’s first wife did?

Told through various POVs, these short chapters keep you invested and quickly turning the pages to see what’s going to conspire. While nothing ever really shocked me, I still was like, “OH NO…. whaaaaaat.” Haha. Of all the characters, Claire surprised me the most. I kinda want to hang out with her… and I also want the dogs, Romulus and Remus. For some reason that campfire scene stuck with me. SOMEBODY GET ME A GUARD DOG. I will say there were a couple of moments towards the end that I side eyed a little bit… but who doesn’t love a good side eye every once in a while.

Ellison is just a master story teller and I will always pick up anything she writes. I would definitely recommend Lie To Me and Tear Me Apart along with this one if you’re looking for something to binge. Those short chapters get me every time! My 5th Ellison book! I loved the atmosphere in this book. I think we could all agree we are in need of an escape, and escaping to an Italian coast sounds perfect right now. I loved the wedding lock room mystery theme this book had going on. I was able to figure out a couple things that were going on, but not everything. I also think it’s cool that @thrillerchick ran an Insta contest and the winners got to “die” in this book. If you are into mysteries, def pick this one up!
