Book Summary

Beth, Portia, and Eddie Morgan haven’t all been together in years. And for very good reasons—we’ll get to those later. But when their wealthy grandfather dies and leaves a cryptic final message in his wake, the siblings and their respective partners must come together for a cross-country road trip to fulfill his final wish and—more importantly—secure their inheritance.

But time with your family can be tough. It is for everyone.

It’s even harder when you’re all keeping secrets and trying to forget a memory, a missing person, an act of revenge, the man in the black truck who won’t stop following your car—and especially when at least one of you is a killer and there’s a body in the trunk. Just to name a few reasons.

But money is a powerful motivator. It is for everyone.

Well well well, Downing, what have you done to me?! I USED to like road trips. 🤣 Beth, Portia and Eddie… and ALL THE SECRETS. Now, I don’t have siblings but I have been on many a long trip and siblings or not, your companions will, at some point, get on your last nerve. People are just not meant to be in confined places for numerous hours. Especially if they know how to push all your buttons.

What’s interesting is how this book is entirely told via Beth’s POV. I think some readers will get frustrated with how this all seems like it’s told, rather than shown. I didn’t really have much of an issue with it though as I felt like my claustrophobia within her complex mind really made me feel like I was sitting with them on their way. You better believe I was thankful for some reprieve once in a while … but I didn’t get it – because I kept wondering WHAT THE HELL WAS GOING ON! I will admit that I did think some things dragged on a bit too long. HOWEVER, I think it was well done as it really gives you that road trip feel.

Now listen, you might think you know what you know but you don’t really know, you know? I couldn’t have foreseen that ending coming if my life depended on it. 😉 I turned that last page and the word “WHAT” came out of my mouth. I kept turning thinking maybe they missed a couple pages? No? HELL YES!! Absolutely loved that ending. Seriously. Well done, Downing. 👏

This is a story about three siblings that must exactly recreate a cross country road trip that their grandfather took them on as children, in order to receive their substantial inheritance.
    .
The siblings have a dysfunctional relationship- throw in secrets, lies, greed, revenge, many days cooped in a vehicle and money as a motivator- craziness is bound to ensue.
    .
This is one WILD ride! ✨I highly recommend!

Samantha Downing has easily become one of my favorite thriller authors. I loved My Lovely Wife, and I loved this one too! 😍 The setting of this story was so unique, and the ending had so many twists that I did not expect at all. 😱 I enjoyed the entire book, but that ending impressed me so much. Not only do I love this author’s books, but I also love her book covers. They are the best! 🤣 Now, I’ll be counting down the days until Samantha Downing’s next book releases. 🤩

This was one of my faves of 2020. And I’ve read over 100 books so far!

To me reading an author’s second book can be scary when I loved their first book. Will it live up to the hype of the first? Will I be disappointed? Are they essentially a one hit wonder?

I adored My Lovely Wife, ever since I first laid eyes on the cover it became a must read. My Lovely Wife was definitely one of my top 10 in 2019. And I could not wait to get my hands on Downing’s new book.

I can happily say this book didn’t disappoint, in fact I might I have loved it even more then My Lovely Wife.

This book is so unique. I felt like I was along for the ride, which provides a much needed escape. The descriptions throughout the book are fantastic, and made me feel like I was a part of the road trip. I also loved the short alternating chapters.

There were multiple reveals throughout the book, and I don’t think I predicted any of them. And the ending. Wow. This is the ending that I have been waiting for.

Please check this one out, you won’t be disappointed!

Three siblings take a road trip to honor the last wishes of their recently deceased grandfather and secure their inheritance. As a re-run of a childhood adventure, emotions run high and adult perspectives throw new light on memories held from that time. Each preoccupied with their own secrets and priorities, the threat of being followed lurking not far away, and the strange request to re-live a formative journey, it won’t be long before survival instincts take over and the threat of not returning in one piece becomes very real.

Oh my goodness, I was devastated to reach the conclusion of this book, it having knocked me sideways and packed a punch from its early stages. Written from the point of view of middle child Beth and interspersed with diary extracts, the reader is invited deep into her psyche, layers and formative experiences being laid bare with every turn of the page.

I was enthralled by Samantha Downing’s The Lovely Wife and this is just as good. Her ability to write as a multi-layered protagonist is to be admired, the reader so deep in the mind of the narrator that their words spoken become the book’s sole truth, almost incapacitating the ability to form an independent opinion of the other characters. The result is a thrilling ride that leaves you inhaling the chapters one after another until the ending hits you between the eyes with a finale you didn’t see coming.
