Book Summary

Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.

When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moments, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is the first in a brilliant new series from award-winning author Elle Cosimano.

I’ve seen this book around on bookstagram for months and I was intrigued. I’ve never read a thriller that is supposed to be funny so I kept putting it off. My curiosity got the best of me and I finally read it. I’m so glad I did because I freaking loved it! It was just the kind of book I needed but didn’t even know it! It was ridiculous in the best way! I loved Finlay and Vero together, they were so fun and reminded me of my best friend! Fast paced, witty and that ending?! I did not see that coming! I’m excited for the sequel and TV adaption!

This book, Finlay Donovan, lives up to all of the hype and then some. It humorous, mysterious, and compulsively readable. I ended up binging it over the last 24 hours, and have no regrets. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Finlay and the cast of characters so wonderfully created by our author, Elle. I plan to investigate her backlist titles as I look for my next read! If you need something lighthearted that will also keep you guessing – I highly recommend this read! 💖

Elle Cosimano’s latest novel Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is quirky, hilarious, and so much fun. Struggling author Finlay Donovan is completely down on her luck and is desperate to make ends meet so that she can keep her children in her custody. When her literary agent meets up with her to discuss her latest novel, Finlay is mistaken for a hitman and gets herself tangled up in some seedy activities which lead her to do some questionable things.

Cosimano has truly created a murder mystery as you’ve never read before. Finlay Donovan Is Killing It will have you howling at parts and scratching your head in others. Is the story completely believable? Not really. But it is just such a fun ride that the reader will let go of those notions and just enjoy it a fun read. The characters in the novel are all deeply flawed making the characters themselves quite believable. Finlay is the star of the show and she doesn’t let the reader down in bringing the entertainment. Vero is the babysitter gone rogue and essentially becomes Finlay’s sidekick throughout the story. Vero and Finlay are quite funny together and they just bring a refreshing element to the story.

If you’re looking for a fun, not-so-serious read then I highly recommend picking up Finlay Donovan Is Killing It because it truly is just pure entertainment. There are times where the story feels like it drags on and the book could’ve gotten to the point a little sooner, but besides that, it was such a fun read. Lastly, the ending of Finlay Donovan Is Killing will leave the reader to ponder if we will see Finlay again someday.

First off, love this book cover! 😍💗📖 it’s so cute!

This book was so funny. I’m a huge fan of when a thriller incorporates humor, and I can honestly say this book had me literally laughing out loud. If you’re looking for a lighter thriller that’s very entertaining, you should pick this one up.

MY THOUGHTS: Well this book met the hype!. Elle offers readers fast paced narration, intriguing characters although two are unlikable however Finlay’s conversations with them are freaking hilarious. I have laughed my boots off while reading this book. The characters took me on an adventure with intense scenes I will never forget. There were scenes that literally had me biting my nails and eyes glued to the page. I kept turning wanting more. I devoured this book and couldn’t stop reading and laughing. It was a book where you read along and you could imagine the scenes and hear the characters talking. It was fun a great escape a wild ride my only regret I didn’t grab this book sooner. Thank God for a sequel and a screen adaption because Finlay was definitely killing it and the author SLAYED at writing this book.

Fun fact: the idea for this book came to @ellecosimano at a Panera, as she was having a meeting discussing plot points in a book she was working on, and overheard by fellow diners. Panera is mentioned A LOT in this book, and I was totally craving it by the time I was done.

This one has been everywhere and for good reasons! So I’ll keep this brief. This wasn’t on my radar, I’m generally not drawn to cartoony covers, but I’m so glad I gave this a shot! I didn’t realize I needed a fun thriller, but I totally did.

I love how this one takes place about 30 miles away from me in Northern Virginia. It’s always fun to recognize places in a book, especially when it’s a book you are loving. This one reminded me of Dead to Her so if you liked that show I’m sure you will like this one. I thought the ending was perfection, and can not wait for a sequel. I would love to see this made into a @netflix show.

I don’t think I would have picked this book up on my own, but it surprised me on my door step and I am so glad it did!
    .
It is witty, clever, funny, fast paced and captures your curiosity from the beginning. I sat down to read it and had read 2/3 of it before I even realized it!
    .
I was an old school Janet Evanovich fan and it definitely has Stephanie Plum vibes (if you know, you know)😊

Finlay’s life is a complete disaster. Her husband cheated on her and divorced her. She lost her mind when he announced his engagement. She has two small kids to take care of on her own. She can’t seem to write the book she has already received an advance for. She can’t pay her bills and her electricity has been shut off.

One day, she is overheard discussing the plot of her book and is mistaken for a contract killer…….

Thank goodness for the zany ladies in this read because all of the men sucked – except for maybe Julian. 😉 I cannot express enough just how FUN this book is! And I love that this book was forged in a Panera – the same as Finlay discussing HER book. (People, read the acknowledgements, k?)

I always wonder what people around me may think of my topic of conversation sometimes. But imagine discussing murder for the plot of your book and being overheard by a woman who takes it seriously and wants to pay you $50,000 to get rid of her husband. Even if it wasn’t a pandemic where people are barely scraping by, it would be hard to pass up. Especially if you already have a bad taste in your mouth for men in general because your ex-husband is so hugely an asshole that his whole body puckers when he clenches. And what starts off as *innocent* research for the book turns into something else entirely.

EVERYBODY, please pick this book up. Finlay’s head is SO much fun to be in. Add in her nanny, Vero and voila – a hilarious duo who could use a little extra money. Couldn’t we all? And that epilogue…. I loved it. How I would love to see how that all played out.

A unique, fun and binge worthy read.
